Task 1: in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

We used a clock to open our thriller which shows the second hand ticking. this builds up tension and increases the heart rate.


followed after this shot was a title. we decided to keep the same structure of titles to make it professional and smartens the imiage up.



After the title we chose to use short sharp and close up shots. This was done to create tension because it was very intense.










After watching our our set movie which was the Dark Knight we chose to use a bit of the sequence. We chose to do this because when watching it. It was full of tenstion with the tack slowly toward to bomber then the teddy bear dropping in his hand out of the bag.

Then we moved to a close up of the actors face which brings it back to the close and intense feel. This brings back the tension.

This is our last shot then we decided to put our title at the end to give a big impact on the viewers.

Task 2: how does your product represent particular social groups ?

• How does your product represent particular social groups?

Our products main social group is terrorism. The way it is represented is by a suicide bomber which builds his bomb in a flat is most of our trailer footage is on this, but he then intends on going to a high street and releases the bomb. And this is sort of represented in the film vantage point. The President of the United States is in Salamanca, Spain, about to address the city in a public square. We see a plain-clothes cop, his girlfriend with another man, a mother and child, an American tourist with a video camera, and a Secret Service agent newly returned from medical leave. Shots ring out and the President falls; a few minutes later, we hear a distant explosion, then a bomb goes off in the square. Those minutes are retold, several times, emphasizing different characters' actions. This relates to our film as it is to do with a killing in a large area. In vantage point this was shot in a large square where the president was addressing the Spanish crowds. In our film the killings is in a high street where there was a lot of people around to get the maximum effect. Vantage point was aimed at the same target market that we are aiming at for example Action Crime Drama Thriller.
Another movie is Der Baader Meinhof Komplex the plot of this movie takes a look at Germany's terrorist group, The Red Army Faction , which organized bombings, robberies, kidnappings and assassinations in the late 1960s and '70s. This relates to our movie by the use of terrorists because it is about bombings, kidnappings and assassinations, this links with our film by bombing and assassinations because using a bomb is a form of assassinations it also has chosen the none stereotypical vision of a terrorist someone who isn’t from a muslim or Islamic background.
We used a teddy bear this showed an image of soft , cute and not harmful but by putting a bomb in it this changed the image completely it comes across as a secret killer by doing this it changes the whole perception of the teddy bear.


• Look at how Social groups are represented in media products and compare these to your own film – how do they differ?

We chose something completely different to the normal stereotypical image such as a Muslim or someone from eastern Asian back grounds. In the news you wouldn’t expect a Spanish origin man be a suicide bomber you would more like suspect a Muslim or someone from a Islamic background. Hear is a stereotypical image of a bomber taken from the BBC website. This is a picture of one of the London bombers who has been jailed. When we chose our bomber we didn’t want to fall under this stereotypical bracket so we changed our bomber to someone who doesn’t look like they are from and eastern Asian backgrounds. For the recent attacks on London the news said it was buried in Pakistan is an auto assumption that they planned it in Pakistan. This is why using a non stereotypical person breaks the mold. When I was looking at other types if media I looked at the film team America this shows a clip of footage what they thing a terrorist looks like they stereotypical image is that they have a big bushy beard and buck teeth and have spooky eyes this is shown to be a intimidating look towards to audience. But going back to our bomber he looks completely different this appeals to a larger target audience which will be good to produce the movie on a large scale.

Task 3: what kind of media institution might distrubte your media product and why ?

I would use warp productions as' the reason why I would use them is because it is a small company and it isn’t a Hollywood style of movie it would be for a small captive audience this is why I chose Twickenham film studios. The movie doesn’t have many a list cast members because it is not out to capture everyone’s attention this is more of an exclusive movie and small studios know hoe to capture curtain targeted audiences. Warp productions have produced some good movies such as THis Is England and Donkey Punch this is another reason why I wanted to use them because it shows that they where successful in their differing genres. They don't make high budgeted movies its a studio that uses a lot smaller budgets than Hollywood where money is not a question but they can manipulate the budget so it can be to the best possible movie with out putting lots of money in to it to make it a blockbuster .

Task 4: who would be the audience for your media product?

My target audience for my film is between the ages of 15- 25 I chose this target audience because it would be most appealing to this audience. The movie is rather graphic because it is about a suicide bomber we chose this because it builds suspense by showing the process of building the bomb this target audience should me more of a male audience because of the type of movie which would be shown rather graphic and I guess that a movie on a suicide bomber is top of the list for girls to go watch. I can’t think of any other movies that compliment our idea as this is not my most favourite sub genre. This genre that our movie is based on is a thriller / horror we chose this because it would have a larger targeted audience this would mean that more people would want to go and see the movie meaning that the pay back of the movie would be exceeded in a small amount of time

Task 7:Looking back at your preliminary task,what do you feel you have learnt in the progression front it to full product?

Looking back at our preliminary task I have learnt a lot more on how to handle the camera. For example in our preliminary task we just used the 180° rule. But in our thriller we used tracking shots, and extreme close ups. By using extreme close ups people didn’t know what the actor looked like this would keep the tension high. In our preliminary task we were getting used to using lighting, we benefited from having a preliminary task before our thriller shoot as it gave us experience with the equipment that we are going to be using.

In the preliminary task we had to change job roles to experience what each role consisted of. For our thriller we decided before the shoot day what everyone was doing I was in charge of lighting we had a group decision on what type of lighting we wanted and we chose to use a swing bulb with 6 main light pulsing whilst the bulb was swinging from side to side. This created the effect of a run down room where the bomb was being made.

The preliminary task was set in a class room as we had no chose of location for this but it gave use experience with dealing with difficult rooms to film in for example a class room is small and hard to move around in and has harsh lights. But in our thriller we chose to use our film studio as it was easy to light and you could create anything inside it for example we built a small room which was the room where the bomb was constructed. By using the studio it was easy to light as there was a variety of lights we could use, we also chose to take a tracking shot up Guildford high street which was a complete location change from the class room that we were set to film in our preliminary task.

With our preliminary we didn’t have to plan a shot time table as this was done with in an hour, but when it came to our thriller we had so many shots to do that we had to plan what shot we were going to do over the day and when we broke for lunch. When it came to edit our preliminary task it was very basic with harsh cuts between each frame and not title cards in place. When we edited our thriller we spent a lot more time on getting the sound to go with our shots, we also added title cards to make it look like a trailer for a movie. when we were editing our thriller we got to grips with the use of final cut pro and understood how to use it with little guidance.

The preliminary consisted of digetic sounds this is sound that you can hear in the shot for instant talking when the male character spoke to the female actress. For our thriller we used non digetic sounds this is when we create a sound track or play a sound track to the footage of the film, we thought that non digetic sounds would be more effective in our thriller as it would create tension along with the pulsing lights and extreme close ups on camera, we did this keep our audience on edge. In final cut pro we used layering of sounds so it would crate more tension with in each frame. This would leave the views on edge wondering what is coming next.

With the preliminary we didn’t think about which target audience we were appealing to but in our thriller we tried to widen our target audience as much as possible we did this by using a teddy bear, this would bring in younger children also so we used an attractive male actress which would appeal to older women and we used the original 15-24 year olds. It would also appealed more to a male audience as our preliminary was aimed purely at the 15-24 year olds.

In our thriller most of the shots was based on the building up of tension. this was create by having lots of short Sharpe shots which didn’t show much of the face this would leave views on edge and crate tension alone. We only used on actor as there were no need for another actor. In the opening stages of the trailer we didn’t reveal his face this create tension along with the sounds. We used extreme close ups as this would increase the intensity of the shot.

Write up of my shoot day

First of all we had to get to studio the day before to set up our set so we would be able to shoot our thriller on the time table we had planned. We went to the editing suet to discus what our plans where and what we were going to shoot. We decide to shoot in the studio as it was our main feature. In the studio there was a run down flat built this set the scene of our suicide bombers bed where most of the film took place.

We started film shortly after ten o’clock we where filming the construction of the bomb and his targets of where he is going to blow. This took just over 3 hours to film. We had some alterations we started filming with a full beamed bulb light but then we decide to create more effect and to build the tension that the light would be better of swinging from side to side which gave an image of a dark and dingy old room which wasn’t looked after, so we re filmed all most of the sequences again as it would have been strange to cut to a swing light from a stationary light.

We broke for lunch at one o’clock and by this time most of our indoor filming was done. We still need to take a couple more shots which we gave around an hour for after lunch. The shots we had left of a high angle shot of the whole room from an aerial view this shot was of his daily routine for the day of that day of making the bomb then leaving to go and blow up Guildford. We left our selves forty-five minutes for lunch. After returning to the studio just to finish up on our last couple of shots we then went in a mini bus to Guildford to film our last section of our thriller sequence.

We arrived at Guildford at 3 o’ clock this gave us enough time to run through the shot before filming it. We had to be quick as we didn’t have a permit to film in a public place. The location couldn’t of been more of a better day as there where stools in the high street and lots of people around. This built up more tension as one of our shots was of the actor putting the bomb in a teddy and when we where in Guildford you would see the teddy in the actors had. We stayed at Guildford for around 20 minutes by then we had all the shots we needed in that location. We came back from Guildford and watched our footage we took. Our group was proud of the quality of filming.
